Horst Schroeder: 'Additions and Corrections to Richard Ellmann’s Oscar Wilde'

Non c’è dubbio, Horst Schroeder ha svolto un ottimo lavoro nella stesura della seconda edizione di “Additions and Corrections to Richard Ellmann’s Oscar Wilde”. Il libro, stampato privatamente nel 2002, è un capitolo indispensabile per chiunque desideri studiare la vita dell’autore irlandese. E, soprattutto, è un utilissimo abbinamento alla monumentale biografia (vincitrice del premio Pulitzer nel 1989) che il biografo americano pubblicò nel 1987. Lo stesso anno in cui morì ad Oxford.
Ellmann è stato abile a offrire una descrizione molto intensa della figura di Wilde. E anche se durante le ultime decadi alcuni critici tendono a vedere Oscar in una luce piuttosto diversa, quella biografia resta un punto di partenza di qualsiasi ricerca wildiana.
Dopo una prima edizione di 82 pagine redatta nel 1989, Horst Schroeder ne ha pubblicata un’altra rivista ed ampliata che, lungo 311 pagine, raccoglie migliaia di annotazioni. La proposta del materiale segue in maniera parallela l’edizione della biografia pubblicata nel 1989. I passaggi che Schroeder indica come meritevoli di correzioni o aggiunte richiedono spesso poche parole, altre volte sono necessarie analisi più profonde per soddisfare completamente la questione. Ogni annotazione è scrupolosamente verificata e, molte di esse aiutano a illuminare di nuovi dettagli la vita di Wilde.

There’s no doubt, Horst Schroeder have done a great job in writing the second edition of “Additions and Corrections to Richard Ellmann's Oscar Wilde”. The book, privately printed in 2002, is a must for everyone who wants to study the life of the Irish author. And above all, it’s a very useful coupling of the monumental biography (winning of the Pulitzer Prize) that the American biographer published in 1987. The same year he died in Oxford.
Ellmann was able to offer a more intensive description of the figure of Wilde. And even if during these two decades some critics tend to see Oscar in a somewhat different light that biography is still the starting-point of all Wildean research.
After a first edition of 82 pages printed in 1989, Horst Schroeder has issued a second one revised and enlarged, running to 311 pages, with more than a thousand annotations. The arrangement of material follows the 1989 edition and the book parallels the overall structure of Ellmann's biography. The passages that Schroeder cites for correction or addition often require just a few words, although sometimes they need lengthy discussions to fulfil the subject. Each annotation is scrupulously verified, and most of them help to give even more light to Wilde’s life.
